Installing OpenOffice.org on Mac OSX. OpenOffice.org is installed like most other Mac OSX applications: Get OpenOffice.org for Mac OSX; Open the downloaded disk image by clicking on it Drag and drop the OpenOffice.org icon into the Applications folder or any other folder on your system.

OpenOffice.org finally has a native version for Mac, which is why it doesn't need to run the X11 server (only available for Mac OS X Intel for now). Although OpenOffice.org doesn't automatically run the guide that allows you to select the kind of document you want, you can access the different applications from the corresponding menu bar: Text Document, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Database, or Drawing.

Office 2016 for Mac (16.x branch) on El Capitan (10.11.6) won't load and crashes. After the Auto Update, updated my Office 2016 for Mac and I could no longer open any Office application. I'm on El Capitan (10.11.6) and can't upgrade the OS due to other software compatibility issues.

Mac users can now download the OpenOffice.org 1.0 X11 for Mac OS X and Darwin (Final Beta) and begin deploying this free office suite for day-to-day use as near total replacement for Microsoft Office on their Mac OS X-based computers.
